The phrase "running around like a chicken with its head cut off" is often used to describe chaotic behavior. But what if a chicken didn’t just run around for a few moments—but lived for over a year without a head?

That’s exactly what happened to Mike, the headless chicken who survived for 18 months!

The Birth of a Legend

On September 10, 1945, a young rooster named Mike met what should have been his end at the hands of farmer Lloyd Olsen in Fruita, Colorado.

With a swing of the ax, Olsen removed Mike’s head, intending to prepare him for dinner. However, instead of succumbing to his fate, Mike got up and continued pecking for food as if nothing had happened!

A Headless Star is Born

Recognizing the extraordinary nature of this event, Olsen chose to care for Mike rather than finish the job. Over the next 18 months, "Miracle Mike" became a sensation, touring the country and astonishing audiences.

Sideshow promoter Hope Wade even insured Mike for $10,000, and people eagerly paid 25 cents for a chance to see the incredible headless wonder.

How Did Mike Survive?

While most of Mike’s head was gone, a portion of his brainstem and one ear remained intact. Since a chicken’s reflexes and basic bodily functions are largely controlled by the brainstem, Mike was able to function relatively normally.

In fact, it’s estimated that up to 80% of his brain mass remained untouched, which explains why he could still perch, peck, and even attempt to crow—though the sound was more of a gurgle.

The Tragic End of an Unlikely Icon

Keeping Mike alive required diligent care. Olsen fed him a mixture of grain and water using an eyedropper and cleared his throat with a syringe. However, tragedy struck one night when Mike began choking, and Olsen couldn’t locate the syringe in time. Unable to clear his airway, Miracle Mike suffocated, bringing an end to his astonishing run.

Mike’s Legacy Lives On

Though he passed away in 1947, Mike’s legacy endures.
